About Ayton Publishing Limited
An independent Scottish publisher bringing forgotten popular 'classics' back into publication for a whole new readership.
Founded in 2013 this was our original 'mission' statement. And it's one we stick to.
Yes, it really is that simple. For us it's just black and white. We publish books we want to read. We hope you will want to read them too.
Our goal is to bring popular works from the nineteenth century back into general readership in the twenty first century. We respect the writers we publish and so we carefully copy edit each work - some 3.5 million words so far - to make sure that the finished product is a quality, readable experience - respecting the reader. We also add introductions and contextualisations so that you as reader can find out more about the writers and the times in which they lived.
We publish paperbacks in POD (print to order) format. You can also pick up paperback copies (some cheap, some expensive) which are 'facsimile' of the original paperback copies. Again, these tend to use scanned technology and fall far below the standards we expect of a book. Our books have been re-edited to professional standards and are printed by a dedicated book printer. In order to allow worldwide distribution we also publish via Createspace on Amazon (though the paper quality is perhaps not quite as good as from our own printers it does allow people to purchase at the click of a button worldwide should they so wish)
In the digital 'land-grab' it is possible to pick up some of these works in ebook format as free digital downloads from a variety of places but the quality is highly variable and you will probably find them unreadable as they tend to be riddled with scanning glitches. Sometimes there are even whole pages of text missing. HERE'S AN EXAMPLE We take time and care over our ebook conversions, using professional standards and never simply scan - we always fully re-edit and proof our ebooks, which are available for all ereader formats.
We want to offer readers the choice of high quality reading material at a reasonable price. We feel confident that if you try the 'free' or 'facsimile' route before buying from us - and you are really interested in the writers we promote - you'll be back to buy from us. And this is simply because we have high standards and we have put the amount of care and effort into the publishing process that we expect when we pay for books - be they virtual or paper. We are readers too. And it was the difficulty of getting good 'reading' copies of the works we publish that set us up in business in the first place.
Our mission is black and white: Publishing ePublishing Republishing the Past - for a digital future
